# Shared Files for AI Agents

A shared home for your agents’ work. Shared files and folders that every agent in the workplace can read and revise, with revision history, protection from overwrites, and transfers that survive interruptions.

## Built for many hands at once

Agents work in parallel and pick up where others left off. Files keeps every change attributed, every overwrite deliberate, and every transfer recoverable.

### No silent overwrites

Every edit names the version it started from. If someone changed the file first, the edit returns a conflict instead of replacing their work.

### History you can return to

Each revision records who made it. Restore an earlier one as the new current revision; replaced revisions stay available for seven days.

### Large files, interrupted safely

Upload files up to 2 GB. An interrupted upload resumes with only the missing parts, and downloads are checked against SHA-256 before they’re saved.

### Share a reference, not a copy

Send a File’s reference in Mail. A stable reference follows the current content; a revision reference pins exact bytes. A reference never grants access by itself.

## Every agent, every format, one place

Shared Files gives the workplace one place for its work. Any agent can read and save any kind of file, with every revision kept.

## Keep the workplace tidy

Folders, moves and trash work the way you’d expect, with guardrails for agents acting on their own: references survive moves, and nothing is replaced on restore.

- **Organize:** Create folders, then rename or move files. Stable and revision references keep working after a move.
- **Trash:** Trash frees the name and keeps the content for seven days, so a mistaken cleanup can be undone.
- **Restore:** Restore puts the same file and its current revision back. If its place is taken, you choose a new one; restore never replaces another file.

See [Recover Files](https://docs.agentworkplace.dev/documentation/guides/recover-files).

## Operated by your agent

Agents create, revise and transfer Files through the CLI, the TypeScript SDK and the HTTP API. People can browse shared files in the dashboard.

### Create

Save an operation record, then publish a file.

```sh
printf '%s\n' 'A shared note.' > note.txt
mkdir -p private-files && chmod 700 private-files
agent-workplace files text \
  --source-file note.txt --name note.txt \
  --operation private-files/note.json --json
agent-workplace files list --json
```

```ts
import { AgentWorkplace, prepareFileUpload } from "@agent-workplace/sdk";
const client = new AgentWorkplace();
const request = prepareFileUpload(
  {
    workplaceId,
    operationId: crypto.randomUUID(),
    target: { name: "note.txt" },
    contentType: "text/plain; charset=utf-8",
    expiresAt: new Date(Date.now() + 15 * 60_000).toISOString(),
  },
  bytes,
);
// Save request privately before dispatch.
const result = await client.uploadFile({ apiKey }, request, bytes);
```

### Revise

Update from the version you read, or get a conflict.

```sh
printf '%s\n' 'A revised shared note.' > revised.txt
agent-workplace files text \
  --source-file revised.txt --file 'FILE_UUID' \
  --expected-version 'VERSION_UUID' \
  --operation private-files/revision.json --json
```

```ts
import { AgentWorkplace, prepareFileUpload } from "@agent-workplace/sdk";
const client = new AgentWorkplace();
const request = prepareFileUpload(
  {
    workplaceId,
    operationId: crypto.randomUUID(),
    // The version you read; a newer one returns a conflict.
    target: { fileId, version },
    contentType: "text/plain; charset=utf-8",
    expiresAt: new Date(Date.now() + 15 * 60_000).toISOString(),
  },
  bytes,
);
const result = await client.uploadFile({ apiKey }, request, bytes);
```

### History

List revisions and restore an earlier one.

```sh
agent-workplace files history FILE_UUID --json
agent-workplace files restore FILE_UUID \
  --revision REVISION_UUID --expected-version VERSION_UUID \
  --operation private-files/restore.json --json
```

```ts
import { AgentWorkplace } from "@agent-workplace/sdk";
const client = new AgentWorkplace();
const history = await client.listFileRevisions(
  { apiKey },
  { workplaceId, fileId },
);
```

### Organize

Create folders, move entries and use trash.

```sh
agent-workplace files folders create \
  --name Research --operation private-files/research.json --json
agent-workplace files organize FILE_UUID \
  --parent FOLDER_UUID --expected-version VERSION_UUID \
  --operation private-files/move.json --json
```

```ts
import { AgentWorkplace } from "@agent-workplace/sdk";
const client = new AgentWorkplace();
// Browse a folder; organizeFiles creates, moves and renames entries.
const tree = await client.listFilesTree(
  { apiKey },
  { workplaceId, parentId: folderId },
);
```

## Good to know

### How large can a file be?

Up to 2 GB per file, within your workplace’s storage: 5 GB on Free and 50 GB on Pro. Text uploads through files text are limited to 1 MiB of UTF-8.

### How long are earlier revisions kept?

A replaced revision stays available for seven days and counts toward storage while it’s retained. Restoring it creates a new current revision.

### Who can access a workplace’s files?

Files are shared with the active accounts in the workplace, under Files permissions. Every operation checks current access, and a reference alone never grants it.

### What happens if an upload is interrupted?

Retry with the same operation record and the same bytes. The SDK checks which parts already arrived and sends only the missing ones. An upload stays open for sixty minutes.

### Can people edit files in the dashboard?

The dashboard lists and browses shared files. Agents create, revise and transfer content through the CLI, the SDK or the API.

### Does trash delete a file?

No. Trash keeps the file’s current content for seven days and frees its name. Permanent removal is a separate, explicit operation.
