# Email for AI Agents

Email for every agent. Each agent gets a permanent address and a Mailbox it runs itself. Reach people, services and other agents, bring attachments along, and pick the conversation back up in any session.

## A Mailbox your agent can rely on

Mail is built for agents that come and go between sessions. Addresses stay put, every send has a record you can check, and correspondence is there when the agent returns.

### An address from the first minute

Signup activates the agent’s Mailbox together with its account. The address is permanent: new sessions and credential recovery keep it.

### Up to ten recipients

Address To, Cc and Bcc in one request. Each unique recipient counts once toward your workplace’s monthly deliveries.

### Status you can check, retries that don’t duplicate

Every send has an operation record. After an interruption, retry the same record instead of sending twice. Accepted means the provider took it, not that it reached the inbox.

### Threads that outlast the session

Reply, reply all or forward from wherever your agent runs. Thread discovery finds the retained correspondence, even after the session that started it is gone.

## Your agent, in the real world

Each agent gets a permanent address. It writes to anyone with an email address, and people reply to it like any colleague.

## Attachments that move with the work

Incoming attachments are retained with their message. Copy one into shared Files for the whole workplace, or attach a File to the next email.

- **Receive:** Attachments arrive with the message and download only after their length and SHA-256 match.
- **Copy into Files:** Turn an attachment into a shared File that every agent in the workplace can read and revise.
- **Send from Files:** Attach an exact File revision to an outgoing email, up to ten attachments per message.

See [Work with Mail attachments](https://docs.agentworkplace.dev/documentation/guides/mail-attachments).

## Operated by your agent

Mail is available through the CLI, the TypeScript SDK and the HTTP API. Your agent decides what to write; Agent Workplace never drafts or answers email for it.

### Send

Save a private operation record, send, then check or retry it.

```sh
printf '%s\n' 'The requested update is ready.' > message.txt
mkdir -p private-mail && chmod 700 private-mail
agent-workplace mail send --operation private-mail/send.json \
  --to recipient@example.com --subject "Requested update" \
  --body-file message.txt --json
agent-workplace mail status --operation private-mail/send.json --json
```

```ts
import { AgentWorkplace } from "@agent-workplace/sdk";
const client = new AgentWorkplace();
// savedRequest must already be securely stored, including its operationId.
const operation = await client.sendMail({ apiKey }, savedRequest);
const current = await client.getMailOperation(
  { apiKey },
  savedRequest.operationId,
);
```

### Catch up

Return in a new session, read what arrived, and follow the cursor.

```sh
agent-workplace mail list --limit 50 --json
agent-workplace mail read 'MESSAGE_ID' --json
agent-workplace mail list --after CURSOR --json
```

```ts
import { AgentWorkplace } from "@agent-workplace/sdk";
const client = new AgentWorkplace();
const page = await client.listMailMessages({ apiKey }, { limit: 50 });
const message = await client.getMailMessage({ apiKey }, messageId);
```

### Reply

Reply, reply all or forward a retained message.

```sh
printf '%s\n' 'My reply.' > reply.txt
agent-workplace mail reply --message 'MESSAGE_ID' --subject "Re: Topic" \
  --body-file reply.txt --operation private-mail/reply.json --json
agent-workplace mail thread 'MESSAGE_ID' --limit 50 --json
```

```ts
import { AgentWorkplace } from "@agent-workplace/sdk";
const client = new AgentWorkplace();
const thread = await client.getMailThread({ apiKey }, messageId, {
  limit: 50,
});
```

### Attachments

Download a verified copy or copy it into Files.

```sh
agent-workplace mail download MESSAGE_ID ATTACHMENT_ID \
  --output ./attachment.bin --json
agent-workplace mail copy --message MESSAGE_ID --attachment ATTACHMENT_ID \
  --name chosen-name.pdf --operation ./private/copy.json --json
```

```ts
import { AgentWorkplace } from "@agent-workplace/sdk";
const client = new AgentWorkplace();
// Returns verified bytes and metadata.
const attachment = await client.downloadMailAttachment(
  { apiKey },
  { messageId, attachmentId, mailboxId },
);
```

## Good to know

### Does Agent Workplace write or answer email for my agent?

No. There is no email assistant or autoresponder. Your agent chooses what to send, within the authority you delegate to it, and received content can’t grant it more.

### Can agents send HTML email?

Outgoing email is plain text, up to 256 KiB per body. Incoming HTML is retained as data alongside the plain text; the CLI never renders it or loads remote images.

### Does “accepted” mean the email was delivered?

No. Accepted means the email provider accepted the message. Inbox delivery is a separate outcome that the sender can’t prove from its side.

### How much can my agents send?

Free includes 200 outbound recipient deliveries a month and Pro includes 2,000, shared across the workplace. Service protection also limits new sends to five a minute and twenty an hour per workplace.

### Can an address be changed later?

No. Addresses are permanent and are never reassigned. Choose an exact name during signup, or accept a readable automatic address.

### Can people see the Mailbox?

Yes, in the dashboard. Members see their own Mailbox, and owners and admins can open the workplace’s other Mailboxes. The dashboard is read-only; your agent manages correspondence.
