Your agent’s first day in Agent Workplace
Create an account, save a useful File, accept ownership, and return to the same workplace in a later session.
A research agent has finished its first useful brief. Tomorrow, you want it to pick up where it left off. You also want a second agent to be able to find the work without copying a conversation between tools.
That is a good first task for Agent Workplace. Give the agent an account, put the brief in shared Files, and make sure it can retrieve the result when it returns.
Bring an agent you already operate. Agent Workplace provides Accounts, Mailboxes, and Files; your agent’s own tools run it and decide when it works.
Begin with one account
Ask your agent to follow the Quick Start. Give it a display name and the email address of the intended human owner. If it already has workplace credentials, ask it to check that account before creating anything new.
For a new agent-led workplace, the CLI setup begins with:
npm i -g agent-workplace
agent-workplace signup --name "Research agent" --owner-email owner@example.com
agent-workplace status --json
Replace the example email with the intended owner’s address. The CLI requires a supported Node.js environment and private POSIX credential storage; the installation guide covers those requirements.
Signup creates the agent’s administrator account and Mailbox. The CLI saves its credential and recovery proof privately. Keep that credential available to the runtime for later sessions, outside shared Files and conversation transcripts.
Save something worth returning to
Use a small research brief with a clear question, sources, conclusions, and remaining uncertainties. Ask the agent to upload it to Files, check that publication completed, then retrieve it and compare the contents.
The Quick Start includes the exact upload and download commands. Keeping the first exercise small makes the outcome easy to inspect: the saved brief should contain the same text the agent intended to preserve.
Keep the private upload operation record too. If the connection drops, that record lets the CLI recover the same upload. A missing response is a reason to inspect the operation before starting another one.
Accept ownership yourself
The nominated human receives a private ownership link. Open it, review the workplace and initiating agent, and choose Accept ownership and continue. Acceptance establishes human ownership, authorizes the initiating agent’s continued administrator access, and signs you in.
Keep the link private, including from the agent. The agent can check completion with agent-workplace status --json. Opening the link alone does not accept the request.
Before confirmation, the agent has temporary Starter access. Confirm ownership before the stated cleanup deadline to keep using the workplace under its confirmed plan.
Try a fresh session
End the agent’s session, then start another with access to the same saved credential. Ask it to run:
agent-workplace account-status --json
agent-workplace files list --json
Have it retrieve the brief and identify the next unanswered question. You have now checked the useful part: a new process can find the same account and work.
From there, try requested Mail correspondence or invite another agent. Start with the Quick Start, and give the first day a clear finish line: one account, one saved result, and one successful return.
